South and Vale Holiday Activities

During most school holidays, our Active Communities team offer a range of free and low-cost activities, for young children, teenagers and families to enjoy at locations across South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse.

Bookings open around a month before each holiday period – follow our new Active Communities Facebook page, or to if you wish to join our mailing list to receive regular email updates, or you have any questions or to register interest, please email active.communinities@southandvale.gov.uk 

The activities are usually very popular so, where required, we would encourage you to book early to avoid disappointment.  See below for a full run down of our next programme of holiday activities and how to book. 

Easter holiday 2024

Activities take place between 24 March and 12 April.  Unless stated otherwise, all activities are free and are aimed at preschool and primary aged children to do with their parent/guardians or grandparents.

What’s on, where and when:

Here are brief descriptions of the activities we have on offer for the upcoming holiday period. Under each category, you’ll find when and where the activities take place along with the links you’ll need to make a booking.

Sport and exercise

Xplorer: a fun navigation challenge that is educational and gives children a sense of adventure as they explore the park to find the markers.

  • Tuesday 2 April – 10am-midday – Wantage Memorial Park – OX12 8DP

Family Circuits: A fun-filled session which will have you and your family sweating, laughing, and exercising together, all while enjoying the great outdoors. Designed so that parents and carers can take part in medium intensity exercises, with the children alongside, doing the same exercises at a lower intensity. It’s suitable for all ages and abilities and loads of fun!

  • Tuesday 2 April – 2-3pm – Chalgrove Recreation Ground (MUGA) – OX44 7TE

Activity Day: Come and have a go at various sports and activities. Representatives from the tennis and rugby clubs will have something on offer throughout the day, as well as table tennis. The Fire Service and the ice cream van will be there too. A fun free morning of sport!

Boxfit Teens (11-17 year olds)

Les Mills Born to Move:

Ages 4 – 5 – in these fun-fuelled classes there’s plenty of opportunity for young children to develop their self-awareness, balance, co-ordination, and concentration skills as they interpret music, explore and move to a beat. 

Ages 8 – 12 – this class is jam-packed with cool music and foundation fitness moves and fun games. The highly-trained teachers coach the best from everyone in the class, adapting their approach to match mood and energy levels so everyone ends up feeling great.

  • Monday 8 April – 2 – 2.30pm (4-5yrs) and 2.45 – 3.30pm (8-12 years) – Thame Leisure Centre, Oxford Rd, Thame – OX9 2BB
  • Thursday 11 April – 10.30-11am (4-5yrs) and 11.15am-midday (8-12yrs) – Didcot Leisure Centre – OX11 8AY
  • Friday 12 April, 10.30-11am (4-5yrs) and 11.15-midday (8-12yrs) – Henley YMCA, 2 Lawson Rd, Henley-on-Thames RG9 1NZ

South Abingdon Community Days: The Oxfordshire Play Association have arranged three family community days. All events take place midday to 3pm and are free.

  • Wednesday 3 April – Green space in front of Reynolds Way Shops
  • Tuesday 9 April – Cotman Close Play area
  • Wednesday 10 April – Abingdon Carousel car park

Activities at Better Leisure Centres: GLL, who manage Better leisure centres across South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse on our behalf, are launching new Active Holiday Clubs at leisure centres in Abingdon, Didcot, Faringdon and Wantage. There are junior funded memberships as part of the Holiday, Activity and Food programme (HAF), plus family swims, roller skating and soft play. Details about what’s available at each centre can be found on the Better UK website and the leisure centre Facebook pages.

Arts and crafts

Circus themed Arts and Crafts session: step right up and get creative with some circus-inspired activities. £3 per child (no need to pay for adults)

Circus Skills with Clown Kelsey: join us for a day of fun and laughter learning circus skills for children aged 5 and up! £5 per child (no need to pay for adults) this includes a set of brand new juggling balls to take home.

Circus Themed Monkey Mayhem: come along dressed as something from the circus. £4.50 single or £8.00 2 children.

Decorate Your Own Bug House: a simple arty session to unleash your creativity and create a cosy home for local creepy crawlies. £8

Activities for all residents

Our Active Communities Team work across South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse to help residents with their physical health and wellbeing. They run a variety of weekly activities for all ages and abilities.
